Issue #50: Why You Can When You Think You Can't

Good morning. It’s Monday, October 24th. We turn 50 today! Can't believe we've already sent out 50 issues of Thrive25. Hope you've enjoyed them - there's a lot more where that came from and some new stuff too!

Did you miss any of our issues on NUTRITION last week? Catch up on Issues #45 - #49 here.

This week we're switching gears and talking about GROWTH - specifically how to learn something new.

From the Lab

Sometimes I think, “you know, it’s really a bummer I didn’t learn to code - or learn Spanish for that matter.”

What the hell? I’m only 41 - why don’t I think I’m still capable of learning anything new?

(Don’t even get me started on thinking I’ll ever be able to draw or not be embarrassed singing in the car...by myself).

I’m sure I’m not alone. As we get older, we place limiting beliefs on what we think we’re capable of. Just a few problems with that:

  1. Contrary to popular belief, our brain doesn’t inevitably deteriorate as we get older. Some functions - like semantic memory - actually get better with age!*

  2. Intelligence isn’t fixed - with neuroplasticity our brain is always changing. Learning something new (at any age) creates new synaptic connections (i.e. we get smarter). Trust me - you have genius in you.

  3. Limiting beliefs suck - we need a positive mindset to maximize a healthy lifespan.

So why do these beliefs infect our mind?

  1. Learning new things takes us outside our comfort zone - it’s hard and most of us weren't told that we actually have the capability inside of us.

  2. Making mistakes makes us look dumb and we don’t want to look dumb. I already see the difference between my 2-yr old who doesn’t care what anyone thinks of him as he learns to talk, run, or feed himself, and my 5-yr old who after a few months of kindergarten feels the social pressure of being judged by others.*

  3. Believing we can’t relieves us of the burden that we actually can. But it's truly in our power, not genetics or fate, to be able to learn what we want to learn.**

What’s something you still want to learn?

*One of the many reasons young kids are the fastest learners. Will share more reasons later this week.

Don’t listen to your inner critic that judges you, doubts you, belittles you.
